CAPE FEAR MEMORIAL BRIDGE CLOSURE: UPDATES, RESOURCES, AND CONTEXT

Lori Wainright

Board Member

Lori arrived in the Port City nine years ago and quickly got involved with WHQR Public Media to better understand and connect with the community. As a long-standing member of the WHQR Community Advisory Board (CAB), she has represented the station at various festivals and events, answered phones during pledge drives, and organized many member socials. She is honored to begin serving as a member of the Board of Director to further support the station’s mission of delivering highly credible news, as well as being a source of entertainment and civic discourse.

Lori graduated from the University of Florida in 1984 and began working as an investigative reporter in Washington, DC, covering environmental issues. After relocating to North Carolina and starting a family, she decided to attend graduate school to study clinical counseling. Leveraging personal and professional experiences and a passion for working with families in transition, Lori went to work for the Family Court system more than 10 years ago. In this capacity, she has helped settle thousands of custody cases, taught and supervised UNCW conflict studies graduate students, and introduced trauma-informed practices into the mediation field. She currently serves on the North Carolina Family Court Advisory Commission.

Lori is a City appointee to the New Hanover County/Wilmington Community Relations Advisory Committee (CRAC) that addresses issues of discrimination. She is also a member of the New Hanover Resiliency Taskforce that was formed to raise awareness of the importance of trauma prevention to improve community health and wellbeing. Prior to the pandemic, she volunteered with the Forest Hills Elementary reading program.
