It took Jemila a long time to decide what she wanted to be when she grew up. She is now primarily an actress and storyteller who fell into Public Radio announcing and discovered she loved it.  She has worked for WHQR off and on for thirteen years. In addition to racking up film and TV credits whenever she can, Jemila frequently performs weddings (as an ordained interfaith minister), and still misses another favorite job— as a shepherdess to a flock of thirty sheep in the mountains of NC. She is currently studying to be an animal communicator.

Midday Interview: Grooves in the Grove Concert Series

Realtors Stephanie and Glenn Neighbour had a great idea to create a series of concerts at Poplar Grove Plantation in Scotts Hill.  Glenn came by to tell us all about Grooves in the Grove, a free concert series held every Sunday evening at 5.  This week Mojo Collins performs.

Midday Interview: Choreographer Debra Gillingham and Actor Adam Poole

Director/Choreographer Debra Gillingham and actor/singer/dancer Adam Poole tell us all about the show that opens tomorrow night on Thalian Hall’s mainstage.  Thalian Association Community Theatre presents the Pulitzer and Tony award-winning musical How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.  

The show runs for two weekends: Thursday-Saturday at 8pm and Sunday at 3pm.

Midday Interview: Celebrated Concert Violinist Ray Chen

Ray Chen is a 24-year-old concert violinist who receives standing ovations wherever he plays.  He is in Wilmington this week as Artist in Residence at UNCW, giving master classes and demonstrations; he is also visiting many schools.  His public concert is Thursday night at 8 in the Beckwith Recital Hall in UNCW’s Cultural Arts Building.  For more info and tickets, go to uncw.edu/arts

Midday Interview: Kim Ewonus, Carriage Man

Kim Ewonus grew up in Kansas, but he worked summers as a cowboy on his uncle’s ranch and at rodeos.  He is now one of the costumed carriage drivers/tour guides for Springbrook Farms, steering a trolley pulled by two dapple-gray Percherons through downtown Wilmington.  He tells us about the 16 rescued horses he works with.

Midday Interview: Thalian Association Children's Theatre Presents 'Cinderella.'

Tom Briggs, Artistic Director of Thalian Association, wrote the stage adaptation of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella. Thalian Association Children’s Theatre is producing the show. Tom joined me and director Mike Thompson to tell us all about it:

Rabbi Robert Waxman, who has served the conservative B’nai Israel Synagogue at 2601 Chestnut Street for over 30 years, tells us about the Jewish High Holy Days.  Rosh Hashanah (New Year) begins at sundown tomorrow.  Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) begins at sundown on Friday the 13th.
