It took Jemila a long time to decide what she wanted to be when she grew up. She is now primarily an actress and storyteller who fell into Public Radio announcing and discovered she loved it.  She has worked for WHQR off and on for thirteen years. In addition to racking up film and TV credits whenever she can, Jemila frequently performs weddings (as an ordained interfaith minister), and still misses another favorite job— as a shepherdess to a flock of thirty sheep in the mountains of NC. She is currently studying to be an animal communicator.

Midday Interview: Meira Warshauer, Composer

Meira Warshauer grew up in Wilmington.  She is now a composer.  One of her works will be featured at UNCW this week: Ocean Calling, a work for two pianos that uses not only the keyboards but also the internal strings.  Norman Bemelmans and Elizabeth Loparits perform the piece Thursday night at 7:30 at Beckwith Recital Hall.

Carolina Vocal Arts Ensemble, directed byFriday’s guest Tim Koch, presents Annelies by British composer James Whitbourn.  Starring soprano Arianna Zukerman, Annelies is the first major choral setting of the diary of Anne Frank.

Brunswick Little Theatre presents The 39 Steps, a farce based on the famous Alfred Hitchcock thriller.  Director Jen Iapalucci and her husband Adrian Iapalucci (who plays the romantic lead) told us all about the challenges and joys of creating a show that features 5 actors playing 100 characters in many different settings – all suggested by an empty stage with a chair, boxes of props, and homegrown sound effects.
