Alexa Doran is a third year poet in UNCW's MFA program. Born in Syracuse, New York she moved to Clarksville, TN when she was 18 and completed both her B.A. in English and M.A. in Creative Writing at Austin Peay State University while living there. Two years ago she breezed into Wilmington, North Carolina and has been writing poetry by the sea ever since.

Thank you to everyone who attended our most successful Homemade Holiday Shorts yet!

There was plenty of great conversation, food, drink, and most importantly the most entertaining  holiday stories to date. A special thanks once again to our Master of Ceremonies Rob Zapple, to our charismatic readers Tony Rivenbark, Rhonda Bellamy and Katherine Rudeseal, to Milner's Cafe for the catering, and to our wonderful holiday musicians John Golden and Catesby Jones. Midday Interview: Tim Koch on "Christmas & Carols and All That Jazz"

Tim Koch directs a group of 70 talented and dedicated singers called the Carolina Master Chorale, based in Myrtle Beach. Their holiday concert, "Christmas & Carols and All That Jazz," will be presented twice this weekend: Saturday at 4 pm at Waccamaw High School Auditorium and Sunday at 4 pm at Trinity Church (between 30 and 31st Avenue North on Business Route 17). Midday Interview: Erin Payne and Nina Bays Cournoyer on the 12 Tastes of Christmas

Cape Fear Literacy Council hosts the second annual 12 Tastes of Christmas, a holiday tasting of fine foods and specialty drinks. The event is Friday, December 12 from 7-10 PM at the Brooklyn Arts Center on North Fourth Street. Tunes will be provided by Chill Bill and humor by Dead Crow Comedy. Tickets are $30 in advance only, available on the website at CFLiteracy.org. My guests were Erin Payne, Outreach Coordinator and Nina Bays Cournoyer, co-organizer (with Katherine Clark) of the event.

Midday Interview: Gareth Evans on A Christmas Stroll Through the Past

Gareth Evans is the Executive Director of the Bellamy Mansion Museum. The Bellamy is partenering with the Burgwin-Wright House and St. James Episcopal Church to host A Christmas Stroll Through the Past. Luminaries will light the way between the three historic sites. There will be holiday decorations, many local choirs singing Christmas music, costumed guides, a petting zoo, refreshments and more. The event is Saturday, December 13 from 4-7 PM. You can drop in any time. If you go to the Bellamy at 4 PM there will be cookie and tree decorating activities for the children.

Patty Proutey's 19-year-old son Joshua was killed in 2012 as he left the Community Arts Center downtown late last night. She has created a non-profit to honor his memory which will provide funding for life-affirming activities for at-risk youth in the hope that "good ultimately can come form Joshua's death." The launch of the non-profit, called Journey4Josh, is this Friday from 6-9 PM at Cape Fear Community College's beautiful new Union Station. Patty will speak, as will District Attorney Ben David.
