Planting For The Future

Tree found on Wilmington's North 4th Street.

Wilmington, NC – Organizers of an annual tree giveaway are aiming to hand out 12,000 tree seedlings over the next couple of days.


TreeFest organizers will be giving local residents up to five free tree seedlings in Wilmington near the JC Penny's inside Independence Mall.


Trees being handed out Friday and Saturday include Bald Cypress, Crape Myrtle and Flowering Dogwood. TreeFest started ten years ago after hurricanes Bertha and Fran destroyed scores of area trees

Hugo Neu Opponents Plan For Next Legislative Session

Wilmington, NC – The grassroots organization leading the opposition to a proposed landfill and recycling facility in Brunswick County says one of its legislative priorities will be to extend the one-year moratorium on landfills.


The group Brunswick Citizens for a Safe Environment may have changed its name to Cape Fear Citizens for a Safe Environment, but it hasn't changed it's aim of halting plans for the proposed Sims-Hugo Neu recycling facility and landfill for Navassa.

Lawmakers Looking At Landfill Permits

Wilmington, NC – North Carolina lawmakers may take the power of permitting landfills away from local governments.


The state is halfway through a one-year moratorium on new landfill construction.


State Representative Carolyn Justice says as part of the ban, the Assembly's Environmental Review Commission is looking at how to change landfill permitting and regulation.


Justice is on the Commission and says the state has been slow to regulate small dumps in the past.

Parking Deck Goes to Negotiating Table

Wilmington, NC – Wilmington and the owners of the Water Street parking deck are headed back to the negotiating table, again.

The City Council voted last night to restart negotiations with PB&G about the development of its river-view property. The city's original contract with developer Gene Merritt has already gone through four amendments.

Conventer Center Gets Design and Manager

Wilmington, NC – Wilmington's proposed Convention Center has a manager. City Council members Tuesday night approved a five-year contract with the nation's largest convention center management company, SMG of Philadelphia.

City documents show an arrangement in which Wilmington pays SMG a slowly increasing management fee, starting at $100,00 the first year, and going up 3.5% every year after.

Aditionally, SMG may earn an annual incentive fee based on the center's success.

Residents Have Concerns About River Road

Wilmington, NC – New Hanover County commissioners are expected to decide during their February 5th meeting whether a portion of River Road can be moved to clear the way for a massive development planned for along the Cape Fear River.

Back in 1999, New Hanover County Commissioners re-zoned a nearly 1,400 acre parcel of land for what was then a planned community with 33-hundred homes.

The property has changed hands and now Developer Newland Communities is drawing up plans for a smaller community.
