Traffic Circles Planned for River Road

Wilmington, NC – Developers seeking to bump a stretch of River Road are planning to put two traffic circles in River Road.

Developer Newland Communities says it wants to put one River Road traffic circle at Lorraine Drive and another just south of Barnards Creek.

Residents say the pair of one-lane traffic circles will snarl traffic and developers should instead widen the road for future growth.

Another High-Rise Planned for Wilmington Riverfront

Wilmington, NC – Developers are looking at nearly ten acres along the Cape Fear River in Wilmington to build a hotel and a high-rise residential tower.


John Evans, the developer behind the City View project planned for Eagle's Island, also has plans for the other side of the Cape Fear River. This project is a hotel condo for just south of the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge and a high-rise condo for land just north of the bridge.

Historic Depot Gets Helping Hand

Wilmington, NC – A major exterior rejuvenation of the depot -- the oldest in the state -- is expected to wrap by late March.

Repair crews are working on the building from the floorboards to the roof,
stripping away the former train station's rotting siding and even building new frames around the original window glass.

The total project is expected to cost the town one to three million dollars, which the town is trying to raise through donations, fundraising, and state grants.

Shallotte Eyes Its 'Doughnut Holes'

Wilmington, NC – Shallotte's Board of Aldermen will vote next Tuesday on whether to incorporate the town's so-called 'doughnut holes.'

Uneven expansion has left Shallotte dimpled with pockets of unincorporated land, partially or entirely surrounded by the areas of city jurisdiction.

Prep Work Starts on 1898 Memorial Park

Wilmington, NC – Prep work has started on the 1898 memorial park planned for the northern entrance to downtown Wilmington.

The city says it has started to move fill dirt for the 1898 memorial park located just a few blocks from where the first shots were fired in the Wilmington race riot of 1898.

The memorial park is a joint project with Department of Transportation and the City of Wilmington.

River Road Meetings Set

Wilmington, NC – The time and place have been set for developers to meet with residents to go over plans to move a portion of River Road for a massive development.


New Hanover County Planning staff say the two mandatory meetings are scheduled for Tuesday at 5:30pm and Friday at 12:00pm, both meetings taking place at Winter Park Baptist Church in Wilmington.

Wilmington, NC – After working out a plea agreement last Wednesday morning, defendant Billie Jay "BJ" Wright ate lunch with his lawyer, State Senator RC Soles Jr., and then slipped away.

The 19-year-old Wright was facing 29 charges, ranging from driving with an open container to assault on a female.

Pender County Picks New County Manager

Wilmington, NC – Pender County has its new county manager. Lori Brill is currently Onslow County's assistant manager and public information officer.

Brill has worked for Onslow County for nearly seven years, and will slide south into the Pender County Manager's job next month.

Chairman of the Pender County Commissioners F.D. Rivenbark says he thinks Brill is capable of grappling with Pender County's rapid growth.
