HARRY DAVIS
Born right here in Wilmington, Harry Davis showed his artistic talent early, but a tragic accident, which confined him to a wheel chair, led to his development as an artist. Mainly self- taught, Harry has become one of the premier Afro-American artists in the United States over the last thirty years. His work has won many awards and honors and is considered highly collectable. Many celebrities, including Halle Berry, James Brown, Bill Cosby, Carl Lumbly, Gloria Naylor, and Denzel Washington, are proud to include an original Harry Davis in their private collections.
Mr. Davis's style uses bright colors and impressionistic realism to portray the world as he sees it. His powerful and striking images reach out to the viewer with emotional power. His "Pipe Player" portrays a favorite theme, the musician (or artist) totally involved with his art. US Art Gallery magazine singled this painting out as a notable work of art. But all of Mr. Davis' work is notable - whether he is portraying musicians, athletes, or views of African or rural Southern life. Though confined to a wheelchair, Mr. Davis connects with the entire world through his art.
