My Top Five http://whqr.org en My Top Five Non-WHQR Radio Stations http://whqr.org/post/my-top-five-non-whqr-radio-stations
Working at WHQR (my top station, if there be doubts) as the webmaster, I think a lot about radio, and what makes good radio. There are some generally agreed upon production standards that can help programs sound good or bad. There are basic problems, like that one dj who always plays with the zipper of his jacket on-air so you can't think about the weather advisory he's reading. All you hear is zzzzzzip zzzzzip zzzzzip. Beyond basic sound issues like that, though, it starts to get wishy-washy, creative, and cool.
Thu, 06 Feb 2014 21:18:56 +0000 Jason Hess 50111 at http://whqr.org My Top Five Non-WHQR Radio Stations My Top Five: Books I'm excited to read in 2013 http://whqr.org/post/my-top-five-books-im-excited-read-2013
I often have trouble motivating myself to read recent books -- after all, there are thousands of years of world literature out there and I've only made it through the tiniest fraction! But I'll never finish all of the novels ever written, so in 2013, I am going to read at least five brand new works of fiction. I wouldn't quite call it a resolution, since those are destined to fail (and since it's already halfway through January), and because resolution implies some sort of struggle or sacrifice. These are all books I'm eagerly waiting to hit the bookstore and library shelves.
Thu, 17 Jan 2013 16:07:48 +0000 Michelle Crouch 30274 at http://whqr.org My Top Five: Books I'm excited to read in 2013 My Five Favorite Family (mostly) Holiday Recipes http://whqr.org/post/my-five-favorite-family-mostly-holiday-recipes
I wanted to share a few great recipes – the most requested, every-year-on-the-table Thanksgiving favorites of my family. Most of these, my family and I have made for tens of years, but all have graced the holiday table every year since 2007 when we all found ourselves relocated to Wilmington. This is only the second time I’ve been around for it, but if it’s like last year’s, it will involve more films than one two-eyed human can possibly absorb, fun parties, and very high-quality people watching.
Mon, 05 Nov 2012 18:06:35 +0000 Michelle Crouch 26785 at http://whqr.org My Top Five - Cucalorus features to check out this year Fortress(es) of Solitude: Top 5 Things to do Alone in ILM http://whqr.org/post/fortresses-solitude-top-5-things-do-alone-ilm
From Thoreau’s Walking: “If you are ready to leave father and mother, and brother and sister, and wife and child and friends, and never see them again; if you have paid your debts, and made your will, and settled all your affairs, and are a free man; then you are ready for a walk.” Amongst the various and complex themes imbedded here, the spirit of solitude in Thoreau’s lines is what moves me. Mostly, it is so easy to have outside family fun. My husband Frank and I have six-year-old twin daughters, Maggie and Kate, who love playing outdoors so we've found lots of easy ways to get out and have a great time for very little money. Here are my top five things to do OUTSIDE with kids.
