My Top Five Non-WHQR Radio Stations

Cool Palouse Cats
Credit KUOI FM

Working at WHQR (my top station, if there be doubts) as the webmaster, I think a lot about radio, and what makes good radio. There are some generally agreed upon production standards that can help programs sound good or bad. There are basic problems, like that one dj who always plays with the zipper of his jacket on-air so you can't think about the weather advisory he's reading. All you hear is zzzzzzip zzzzzip zzzzzip. Beyond basic sound issues like that, though, it starts to get wishy-washy, creative, and cool.

My Top Five: Books I'm excited to read in 2013

I often have trouble motivating myself to read recent books -- after all, there are thousands of years of world literature out there and I've only made it through the tiniest fraction! But I'll never finish all of the novels ever written, so in 2013, I am going to read at least five brand new works of fiction. I wouldn't quite call it a resolution, since those are destined to fail (and since it's already halfway through January), and because resolution implies some sort of struggle or sacrifice. These are all books I'm eagerly waiting to hit the bookstore and library shelves.

My Five Favorite Family (mostly) Holiday Recipes

Photo by Mcmlxi via Wikimedia Commons

I wanted to share a few great recipes – the most requested, every-year-on-the-table Thanksgiving favorites of my family. Most of these, my family and I have made for tens of years, but all have graced the holiday table every year since 2007 when we all found ourselves relocated to Wilmington.

My Top Five - Cucalorus features to check out this year

It’s that most wonderful time of the year in Wilmington -- the week of the Cucalorus Film Festival. This is only the second time I’ve been around for it, but if it’s like last year’s, it will involve more films than one two-eyed human can possibly absorb, fun parties, and very high-quality people watching.

Fortress(es) of Solitude: Top 5 Things to do Alone in ILM

www.baldheadisland.com

From Thoreau’s Walking: “If you are ready to leave father and mother, and brother and sister, and wife and child and friends, and never see them again; if you have paid your debts, and made your will, and settled all your affairs, and are a free man; then you are ready for a walk.”  Amongst the various and complex themes imbedded here, the spirit of solitude in Thoreau’s lines is what moves me. I don’t literally want to leave my family and never return, but I do want to be alone every now and then… Who doesn’t?

Cleve's Top Music For The Road

When our webmaster John Mortara said it was my turn to post a Top Five blog entry, I thought it would be a pretty simple matter – just come up with my favorite flavors of ice cream, or Cincinnati Reds infielders, or whatever. But no, I had to dig down deep for this one.

My Top Five Outside Activities with the Kids

My daughters Kate and Maggie, and my niece Jaden. At the Arboretum.

WHQR has a terrific art show up in the MC Erny Gallery called OUTSIDE and I started thinking about all the fantastic ways to spend time outside in Wilmington. Mostly, it is so easy to have outside family fun. My husband Frank and I have six-year-old twin daughters, Maggie and Kate, who love playing outdoors so we've found lots of easy ways to get out and have a great time for very little money. Here are my top five things to do OUTSIDE with kids.

My Top Five: Blues Artists You've Never Heard Of

The Blues.  Its origins are murky (okay, muddy), and it’s legacy is passed from generation to generation.  The people who play the Blues happily adopt the genre, give it a home, dress it up a little, and influence it in their own way.  While you’ve (likely) never heard of them, here are some ear-opening performers who have made the Blues their own…
