He's cool, calm, and collected, a hardcore Bluesman, and a prolific performer who believes in his art. Lightnin' James brings his own music (and a couple of notable Blues standards) to life during WHQR's Soup To Nuts Live! in the MC Erny Gallery. James has performed throughout the Carolinas and competed at the 2012 Cape Fear Blues Challenge.
Check out this clip of James performing Divin' Duck Blues by Sleepy John Estes. (Video: Lan Nichols)
Two different artists, two different cultures, two different styles - a perfect contrast! This much-anticipated exhibit features E. Francisca Dekker and Benjamin Billingsley. Stop by 254 N. Front Street (3rd floor) and see what's hanging in the MC Erny gallery at WHQR.
There's no mistaking the voice. Or the songwriting. Once again, Jeanne Jolly brought the whole package to WHQR's Soup To Nuts Live! in Wilmington NC on Thursday, April 18, 2013. 8-string guitarist (and Jeanne's producer) Chris Boerner and drummer Nick Baglio painted a wonderfully melodic backdrop for Jeanne's performance.
Singer/songwriter/guitarist Brent Stimmel shared his music with us at Soup To Nuts Live! on Feb. 28, 2013. Guest musician Les Britt provided a wonderfully subtle backdrop of electric guitar and vocal harmonies that made this STNL! a night to remember. WHQR thanks Brent & Les for their great performance and being a part of what we do at 91.3fm.
On Sunday, September 16th, WHQR members, listeners and staff came together for an Ice Cream Social at Hugh MacRae Park in Wilmington. Young and old alike shared in the fun as station staff put their backs into it and dug through frozen containers of delicious flavors like Strawberry White Chocolate, Vanilla, and Lemon Basil from Velvet Freeze.
The event was another way for WHQR to say "Thank You" for the generous support that keeps Public Radio vibrant and viable, year-round. Make sure you browse all of the images in our photo gallery!

Last week I read a number of comments from listeners who had bones to pick with us. This week, we’ve had many fewer comments, and I used the opportunity to go back and see what people wrote to us who contacted us by web pledges during our one-day drive in December. And that reminds me to address an issue I have heard a number of people ask about, and that’s the selection of comments to read.
The arm of a crane placing bulkheads on the construction site of the Marriott Courtyard hotel bends under the stress, forcing nearby office buildings to evacuate. Onlookers gathered along Grace Street in downtown Wilmington to watch as crews worked to resolve the situation.
The North Carolina Coastal Federation spearheaded an important event on Saturday, November 19, bringing together WHQR staff & board members, General Electric employees, along with local high school and college students, for the building of an oyster reef at Morris Landing Clean Water Preserve on Stump Sound, near Holly Ridge, NC.
