It's a 'Ladies Night' of Blues on 91.3fm!

Katie Webster

WHQR's Front Street Blues has been a weekend FM mainstay for over a decade, and the Blues just keeps coming. It'll get even more interesting on Saturday, March 15 when host & producer Lan Nichols plays nothin' but the ladies of the Blues.

My Top Five Non-WHQR Radio Stations

Working at WHQR (my top station, if there be doubts) as the webmaster, I think a lot about radio, and what makes good radio. There are some generally agreed upon production standards that can help programs sound good or bad. There are basic problems, like that one dj who always plays with the zipper of his jacket on-air so you can't think about the weather advisory he's reading. All you hear is zzzzzzip zzzzzip zzzzzip. Beyond basic sound issues like that, though, it starts to get wishy-washy, creative, and cool.

Soup To Nuts Live!: Mac & Juice Quartet

Mac & Juice Quartet

Beginning as an acoustic duo over a decade ago, Mac & Juice now travel the countryside as a quartet (acoustic and electric), playing original music described as “a broad-spectrum, rock & roll mosaic” with a vast stylistic range. Their latest release, Step Into The Light, is a mélange of genres that runs the gamut – from Stevie Wonder to Merle Haggard, with hook-laden songwriting and elements of bluegrass, jazz and Americana throughout.  Every show is a surprise, and this episode of Soup To Nuts Live! will be no different.

Exclusive Song Premier: The Avett Brothers, 'Another is Waiting'

It hasn't been 11 full months since the Avett Brothers relaeased The Carpenter, the North Carolina band's most recent collection of bluegrass-inflected folk-rock. Given the length touring cycle that each major release generally spawns, fans had no reason to expect new music this year.

Farewell, Soapbox

Wilmington's music scene suffered a tremendous blow when news broke that the Soapbox would be closing its doors in late July.  The loss won't really be felt until it's gone.  But already the news is causing heartache throughout the creative community.  Sure, there are other venues.  Nice ones, too.  But the Soapbox is the center of it all.  It's almost a symbol of Wilmington itself.  It's a large part of the character of downtown.  John Staton of the Star News rightfully said "It's not quite the

Spotlight: Singer-songwriter David Dondero

Singer-songwriter David Dondero has long been a favorite of mine.  He has a live show that's completely unlike anything I've ever seen.  The shows are always special, whether it's before a big crowd, or as is too often the case, a small gathering.  However big the audience, though, it's held completely captivated from the moment Dave plays his first note.  In his music and in person, he's completely unafraid to speak his mind.  It's what makes him who he is, and frankly, it's what sets him apart from many, many musicians out th

By popular demand: WHQR's schedule will soon cater to youth audience

(this article was originally posted on 04/01/13 as an April Fool's joke)

High Quality Radio just keeps getting better and better! With recent audience polls and pledge drive feedback, WHQR has decided to reevaluate some of its musical offerings. Starting this month, I will be transitioning the bulk of music programming duties to current intern John Mortara. Though I will miss it deeply, I have been told that John has a good ear for what all the hip 20-somethings like to hear on the radio.

Soup To Nuts Live with Brent Stimmel

Singer/songwriter/guitarist Brent Stimmel shared his music with us at Soup To Nuts Live! on Feb. 28, 2013. Guest musician Les Britt provided a wonderfully subtle backdrop of electric guitar and vocal harmonies that made this STNL! a night to remember.  WHQR thanks Brent & Les for their great performance and being a part of what we do at 91.3fm.
