Midday Interview: The Coastal Federation & Progressive Gardens

The North Carolina Coastal Federation holds a Coastal Speakers Series, where experts address various topics,  from oysters to organic gardens to local avian diversity.  Becky Peter is the Community Engagement Fellow with the NCCF and spoke with us about the series.  The upcoming topic is organic gardening and we heard from Evan Folds, the founder and owner of Progressive Gardens about healthy soil and a few things we need to know to grow plants locally.

Midday Interview: Yasmin Tomkinson and Erin Payne on "The Mad Hatter's Tea Party"

The Cape Fear Literacy Council (CFLC) is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year with "A Gala in Wonderland." Interim Executive Director Yasmin Tomkinson  and Outreach Coordinator Erin Payne came in to tell us about the work the organization does in our community - the Mad Hatter's Tea Party will help raise money for this work to continue. Midday Interview: Actor's Arsenal

Allie McCulloch and Ron Fallica moved to Wilmington 2 years ago from Los Angeles. Within two weeks of their arrival they started a business serving local screen actors through workshops, classes, and one-on-one help with everything from resumes to headshots to websites. Midday Interview: Clybourne Park

Joy Gregory took on a difficult task as director of the controversial Clybourne Park by Bruce Norris, a story that has its roots in A Raisin in the Sun. Joy, along with actors Jane McNeill and JR Rodriguez, talk about the various layers of meaning that they found in this award-winning show. Performances are at the Red Barn Theatre February 26 - March 1, and the show also runs one weekend at Thalian Hall, March 19-22. More information at thalian.org

Midday Interview: Ray Kennedy and Jeff Phillips on "Sweeney Todd - The Demon Barber of Fleet Street"

Opera House Theatre Company presents the macabre musical "Sweeney Todd - The Demon Barber of Fleet Street." Director Ray Kennedy talked to us about the beauty and complexity of Stephen Sondheim's musical score, and actor Jeff Phillips (performing the title role) gives us his interpretation of the psychological pressures inflicted upon the Demon Barber.  Show opens on Wednesday, February 25 at 8 PM at Thalian Hall and runs through March 8th, with 8:00 shows Thursday-Saturdays and 3 PM matinees on Sundays.

Midday Interview: Dr. John LaCognata on The Wilmington Symphonic Winds

Dr. John LaCognata is the director of bands at UNCW and conducts a variety of performances each semester. Recently he became the director/conductor of the new performance group, the Wilmington Symphonic Winds. These performers from our region, including such cities as Myrtle Beach, Jacksonville, and Fayetteville, are in the midst of their first season.

The upcoming performance is on Sunday, March 1st at Kenan Auditorium.

Midday Interview: "Love Songs" by Techmoja at Theatre NOW

  Kevin Lee-Y Green, the artistic director of Techmoja Dance Company, created a humorous and poignant love story by weaving together classic love songs. Kevin visited us, bringing the musical director of the show, Marcus Suber and two performers, Adrienne DeBouse and Terrill Williams. The show runs February 19-22 at Theatre NOW. Midday Interview: Alexa Doran on Poetry and Life at WHQR

Alexa Doran is one of WHQR's Graduate Fellows working in the Web Services department. She is studying poetry through the graduate school at UNCW. She is originally from Syracuse, NY and enjoys living in Wilmington with her poochy, Jude. During this interview, she read her poem After you said an artist can inspired by  the photograph Self Portrait with Dada-Kopf by 1920's Dada artist Sophia Tauber. You can catch more of her poetry in upcoming issues of The James Franco Review, Cactus Heart, Educe and CALYX literary magazine.

Midday Interview: Christopher Marino and Luke Robbins on "Hamlet"

Christopher Marino has been in town for barely over a year, but he's already made an impact on the local theater community. He staged popular readings of Shakespeare's work almost immediately upon his arrival in Wilmington and was recently named the Artistic Director of Dram Tree Shakespeare Company. Mr. Marino teaches for the UNCW Theatre Department and is the director of the upcoming production of Hamlet - using a slightly different script than audiences would usually see staged. Marino visited us accompanied by Luke Robbins, the actor playing the title role.
