The Atlantean Trio Sunday: Beethoven & Smetana

Dr. Barry David Salwen

Dr. Barry Salwen, an international concert pianist, is performing with the Atlantean Trio this weekend.    Salwen is joined by violinist Abigail Van Steenhuyse and cellist Richard Thomas (Salwen and Thomas were founders of the trio in 2005; Van Steenhuyse joined in 2011).   This concert features works by Beethoven and Smetana.   Salwen discusses the selections, and many other interesting tidbits,  in this interview.

The performance is on Sunday, April 12 at 7:30 at the Beckwith Recital Hall, located in the Cultural Arts Building (CAB) on Randall Drive at UNCW.

14th Annual "Arts Sensation" Benefits Hospice

Arts Sensation 2015

Over a dozen non-profit organizations have benefited from the yearly fundraiser, Arts Sensation.  This is the 14th year Forward Motion Dance director Tracey Varga has organized this celebration of dance and music to help a local organization; this year, Lower Cape Fear Hospice will be the beneficiary.

Youth "New Play Festival" Revived at Big Dawg

For many years, Virginia (Ginny) Davis was the guiding force behind the New Play Festival with Big Dawg Productions.  After Ginny passed away, the festival faded into the background.

This year, Laura Smith is working with Big Dawg to revive the 5-year-dormant festival, and she's got what it takes to make it happen.  Laura was a participant of the youth play festival under the direction of Ginny Davis several years ago.

Many Programs through Lower Cape Fear Hospice

Diane Miller is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker/Bereavement Counselor who works with the Lower Cape Fear Hospice (LCFH), mainly helping people in our area prepare for loss and overcome difficulties after a loved one has passed away.   Diane joined the CFLH Director of Community Outreach, Jason Clamme, in our studio today to discuss the many events coming up this spring and summer regarding end of life care and family support.

Opening Reception: "Memories of the Past"

Bradley Carter and Jason Parker are very different artists-one works with spray paint and stencils, while the other uses acrylics to create abstract expressionist works.   The exhibit joining these collections together, "Memories of the Past," opens in the MC Erny Gallery at WHQR on Friday, March 27 as a part of 4th Friday Gallery Walk.  Join us for the opening reception from 6:00-9:00.

JAZZFEST-featuring "Warmdaddy" Anderson & Tom Garling

Jerald Shynett is directing the UNCW JAZZFEST for the third year this spring.  The event was launched 30 years ago by Frank Bongiorno, now the department chair of UNCW's Music Department.  In this interview, Jerald Shynett talks about the opportunity 20 high school students are getting through this program and he describes the two guest artists this year-Wess "Warmdaddy" Anderson (saxophone) and Tom Garling (trombone).   We got Warmaddy on the phone, and part of that conversation is at the end of the interview.

Sam Shepard's "Lie of the Mind" at City Stage

"The Creation" by Haydn at Beckwith Recital Hall

The UNCW Concert Choir, Chamber Choir, and Chamber Orchestra are performing Franz Joseph Haydn's "Creation" under the direction of Dr. Joe Hickman, the Director of Choral Activities.  Nancy King has been rehearsing the soloists for the performance, and Bob Workmon is a guest artist performing with the choirs.  Nancy and Bob came to the studio and talked about the performance, and a bit about the history of this work, thought by many to be Haydn's masterpiece.

The Music and Moves of the Cape Fear Contra Dancers

The Cape Fear Contra Dancers hold community dances twice a month, but on Saturday, March 21 they are having a special contra party featuring the band Big Celtic Fun from Chapel Hill.

Linda Thomas, a dancer and contra caller, visited us in the studio along with dancer and hammer dulcimer player, David Shucavage.   Linda and David have both been involved in contradancing for decades, so they shared their knowledge of the history of the dance and music as well as information about the Saturday event.
