The Great American Songbook - Live!
Dear WHQR Friends,
WHQR is thrilled to be co-presenting The Great American Songbook Live at Thalian Hall on Friday, March 2 at 8:30. The show, with an expanded cast of musicians, will be a live version of our popular radio feature with Phil Furia, heard each afternoon at 1:30.
Classic popular songs will performed by Julie Rehder (vocals), Jack Krupicka (piano and vocals) and other outstanding local musicians, including the amazing Grenoldo Frazier. Hear the stories behind the songs, written and narrated by Phil and illustrated by Laurie Patterson from archival images of songwriters, performers, shows, and movies.
The concert will feature some of the most enduring popular songs and show how The Great American Songbook came into being during the first half of the 20th-century through the interplay of the sheet-music publishing industry known as "Tin Pan Alley," the Broadway musical, the emergence of radio in the 1920s, the advent of sound movies, the creation of a jazz repertoire, and developments in the recording industry.
It all comes together to form the closest thing America has to an enduring body of classical song that is performed generation after generation by musicians and singers in styles that range from jazz to blues, rock to country - The Great American Songbook.
Be sure to get your tickets early and don't miss this special opportunity to see a spectacular show on Thalian Hall's Main Stage. This is going to be a great event and we hope that you can all make it. Go to thalianhall.org
