Cape Fear Jazz Society is bringing Grammy Award-Winning vocalist Diane Schuur to Wilmington for a performance at Thalian Hall on Friday night, October 21st. The president of the Jazz Society, Primus Robinson, joined us to talk about Schuur and share his personal excitement about seeing her live for the first time. Listen above.

Grammy-nominated percussionist Michael D'Angelo teaches in the Jazz division of the UNCW Music Department. He's been involved in the weeklong Jazz Workshop at UNCW since he was in middle school. His experience there inspired him to pursue jazz performance and instruction, so for D'Angelo, the Jazz Workshop is particularly poignant this year-it's the 20th Anniversary, and Alumni performers from the past years are converging on the stage of Kenan Auditorium.  Listen to his perspective-and more about the performances-above.

First off…today is commentator Nan Graham’s birthday!

We will be fundraising next week in our Partnership Challenge, so there won’t be an official Friday Feedback. I expect some listeners will wonder what we mean by saying “92 is the new 96.” We now have two different signal for Classical HQR, 92.7 and 96.7. And we’d like your input. More on that in a moment. But first, the story of a pledge made good -- 22 years later.

Thanks to everyone who participated in yesterday’s 1-Day December Drive. We’re pleased to support the work of the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina, and we join with them in thanking Food Lion for donating 4 pounds of food for every pledge received. Here’s a typical reaction from the drive. James Jones of Wilmington wrote:

It’s great to see the station & Food Lion helping feed the hungry at this time of year.

We couldn’t agree more. Thank you, everyone.

Thanks to vacation schedule and some minor health-related down time, we have rearranged some people’s times on air – you’ve heard Bob Workmon, Gina Gambony, Todd Patterson, Rachel Lewis Hilburn and yours truly taking guest slots, dogs and cats living together, mass hysteria, you name it.

Listener Angela wrote on Tuesday:

I was disappointed this morning to hear irresponsible framing of abortion numbers in your reporting. No concrete causation was offered in which you shared any data to support why abortion numbers in NC have dropped. However meaningless correlation between numbers dropping and [the proposed bill] forcing women to wait [72 hours] was mentioned by the reporter.

Of course our big news this week was the visit of Cokie Roberts to Wilmington on Wednesday. It was our largest fundraising event ever, with 500 people in attendance.

Hailing from Nashville, North Carolina, Valerie's music is a silky hodgepodge of originals, jazz standards, blues and legendary songwriters. This dulcet combination of music is of the heart and for the soul. Do not miss out on this powerful Americana trio.
