During our Classical block on Tuesdays through Fridays at 12:06, Jemila Ericson and other staff members host a celebration of the arts and culture of the Lower Cape Fear. They interview artists, actors, dancers, writers and creators of community events--all the inspiring movers and shakers who enrich our lives.

Midday Interview: Artists on The Budding and Blooming Art Show at Mayfaire Town Center

  Wilmington Art Association presents The Budding and Blooming Art Show at Mayfaire Town Center on the Green, Saturday, June 28, from 10 to 4. Forty young “budding” artists will display and sell their work alongside twenty adult “blooming” artists. There will be young musicians performing too, plus Big Al Hall and his group. My guests were visual artists Dorian Hill and Wiio Meinheit and musician Caroline Lemley.

Midday Interview: Barbara Raab on Pawsitive Partners Prison Program

Barbara Raab is co-founder and president of Monty’s Home, a non-profit based in Burgaw that rescues and adopts out animals.  Its Pawsitive Partners Prison Program takes dogs from the Pender County Animal Shelter who are about to be euthanized and pairs them up with prisoners in Pender and New Hanover County correctional institutions.  The men and dogs go through an 8-week training program together, after which the dogs are adopted by families, and the prisoners have a new set of skills.

Midday Interview: Conductor Tom Smicklas on Brunswick Concert Band's Summer Concert Series

Tom Smicklas is a clarinetist, saxophonist and conductor.  He is directing the Summer Concert Series for the Brunswick Concert Band.  It is presenting a week of patriotic concerts, June 27th through July 3rd at various venues in Brunswick County.  Tom is also involved in the creation of the new Wilmington Symphonic Winds.

Midday Interview: Jimmy Pierce on Kid's Making It's Third Annual Hippie Ball

Jimmy Pierce is the founder and director of Kids Making It (KMI), a wonderful non-profit that gives at-risk youth a place to learn woodworking skills and then sell their products to the public.  

The Third Annual Hippie Ball, held this Friday, 7PM at the Brooklyn Arts Center, is a fundraiser for KMI.  “Dust off your flower-power clothes and let your freak flag fly!”

The premiere of Opera Wilmington is coming up with a fully-staged production of Franz Lehar’s The Merry Widow. Artistic Director Nancy King and Executive Director Wendy Fingerhut talk about how this long-held dream of a local opera company is coming to pass. 

Performances are July 25 and 26 at 8pm, plus July 27 at 3pm – in UNCW’s Cultural Arts Building, Mainstage.

My guests today were Joy Dupree Gregory, founder and artistic director of True 2 U Productions, and Tracy Byrd, the director and choreographer of the company’s latest show --  Smokey Joe’s Café: The Songs of Lieber and Stoller.

Midday Interview: Gwenyfar Rohler and Musician James Jarvis On Bloomsday Performace

Monday, June 16th is Bloomsday, on which James Joyce fans around the world celebrate the book Ulysses and its protagonist Leopold Bloom.  At Old Books on Front Street at 7pm, a portion of the play-within-the-book will be performed by marionettes!  Jazz pianist/composer James Jarvis has written music for the show; Gina Gambony and Christy Grantham will work the marionettes created by Nina and Bryan Cournoyer.  Bookstore owner Gwenyfar Rohler and musician James Jarvis tell us all about it.
